This workshop introduces thinking around the future of work. Participants consider the capabilities graduates will need if they are thrive in a rapidly changing world of work.

  1. Discuss global trends and their implications for the future of work.
  2. Identify the capabilities graduates will need if they are to thrive in their future lives and careers.
  3. Relate capabilities to their institution’s Graduate Profile
  4. Reflect on their efforts to develop the capabilities “Future-Ready Grads” will need.

Mission almost impossible? Embedding employability in sessions and courses

About:

Some academics believe that they cannot embed employability related capabilities in their courses. In this workshop participants work together to solve ‘almost impossible’ pedagogical challenges. Participants are introduced to a framework to guide future practice. We’ve tested this workshop, read our blog to find out more.

Who should attend?

Experienced teachers and academic developers

Learning outcomes: 

  1. Assess the range, standard, scope and importance of a range of employability capabilities.
  2. Develop plans for embedding a difficult to teach capability in a session, course or programme.
  3. Evaluate pedagogical practices for embedding employability capabilities into the curriculum
  4. Reflect on their own courses in terms of employability capability development.

Embedding  future ready employability capabilities in programmes and qualifications

About:

This workshop takes a whole of programme approach to developing future ready grads. It identifies the issues and shares practices and tools for coordinating between and across courses.

Who should attend?

Academics responsible for programmes, qualifications or majors

Learning outcomes: 

  1. Assess the range and scope of employability capabilities.
  2. Identify the challenges in providing for coordinated and progressive capability development across the multiple modules/courses that make up a degree.

Teaching future ready graduates

About:

Participants in this workshop reflect on one of their own courses. They learn about future ready capabilities and how they can be taught. Using tools and frameworks participants work on scenarios and then their own courses. Participants leave the workshop with plans for building their students’ employability capabilities.

2-3 hours

Who should attend?

Any group of students or staff

Learning outcomes: 

  1. Describe the pedagogical challenge in developing future ready grads
  2. Describe the 4Es pedagogical framework and contrast it with traditional approaches
  3. Review their own course against the dimensions of the framework
  4. Apply the framework to develop relevant, achievable, low risk and impactful improvement plans 
  5. Identify ways to address constraints on the development of employability and future readiness

Levelling the employability playing field

About:

This workshop takes a whole institution approach. Taking an equity perspective participants work on ideas to create institutions that recognise diversity and prepare all students for their futures.

Who should attend?

University staff involved in teaching or supporting target groups of students

Learning outcomes: 

  1. Identify capabilities that students need for their future lives and careers
  2. Identify equity issues in institutional approaches to developing students’ employability capabilities
  3. Adapt existing and design new institution wide approaches to teaching and supporting non-traditional students
